Document type is not which card is more senior. It is which card the review page accepts today. Binance identification looks at the residence country / region you pick, then lists issuing country and document kinds. If it is not on the list, do not force an upload.
Mainland China residents usually walk national ID. Frequent travellers reach for a passport by habit. Read the list, then shoot. Photos fail more often than the pick: right type, glare on the shot, still a bounce.
This handbook only covers how to pick and how to frame a complete shot. How to fix a reject is another piece.
How residence drives the document list
Review looks at the residence you pick, not where you “feel you are from.” Change residence, and the document dropdown can change. Lock residence first, then talk passport versus national ID.
The public help page puts the entry at identification inside the account. In August 2026 I walked that help page. It said you enter identification from the account, and the current tier sets limits. Which document kinds it takes is still the dropdown, not a promo graphic below.
The same passport, residence picked as country A versus country B, can ask for different extras. Proof of address especially varies by country. Do not paste a neighbour’s window onto yours.
If the signup form already filled residence, identification usually follows. How that form was filled then shapes the list you see now. To look back at the signup fields, see which signup rows to fill before you send documents.
Unsure which card to take out, walk two questions on the KYC document quiz. It only gives a prepare direction. It cannot replace the options on the review page.
Issuing country and residence country can differ. A Chinese-issued passport, residence picked as another country, and the list may want proof of address rather than another Chinese national ID. Follow the residence dropdown. Do not guess from “which country issued my passport.” A wrong guess is a wrong type.
How to shoot a national ID so it is complete
The page has to list a national identity card before you shoot one. Front and back. Name, number, expiry match what you will type. Missing the back, or missing expiry, is an incomplete submit.
Use scattered window light. Do not fire a flash straight on. Laminate glare eats the type. On a mainland China ID, my first glare sat near the crest. A second angle passed. A filter does not help.
Corners complete. Fingers, a desk edge, a phone case — keep them out of frame. Auto-crop sometimes cuts a machine-readable code or the last digit of a number. Look after a crop, then upload.
Colour shift also bounces. Warm night light turns a red ground orange, and review sees a photocopy. Daylight by a window, document on a plain desk, beats a beauty mode. Beauty mode wipes security print. After I turned it off, the type edge was hard. That is what a document looks like.
Photocopies, scans, a photo of a screen — often refused. They want a photo of the original. Screen glare plus moiré makes the number shake. Holding the card in a hand also bends it. Lay it flat, lens square, step back a little.
Name spelling follows the Latin letters on the document. Do not add or drop syllables from a romanisation habit. Account name and document name mismatch, and a later face step will not save it.
Do not upload an expired document. The expiry line has to be readable. I have seen old and new cards in one frame “to prove it is me.” Review wants the one that is in date now, not a story. Put the old card away. Send only the new one.

Hard rules on a passport bio page
Bio page complete, still in date, the two MRZ lines not covered by a finger. That photo page. Not a visa page. Not a blank visa page.
The two MRZ lines matter for matching. My first shot put a thumb on those two lines. The portrait looked sharp. The MRZ was mush. Reshoot, thumb off.
Spell the English name the way the passport spells it, and fill the account the same way. A middle name that exists, fill it. One that does not, do not invent it. After a married-name change, the document still shows the old name — use the document, do not hit the new name early.
Some residences want proof of address on top of a passport. Bill and bank-letter date windows follow the page, and they vary by country. A utility bill a few weeks past the window is not a thing to try.
The name on proof of address has to use the same spelling set as the document. A shared-flat bill in a roommate’s name will not work. An e-bill can work if issuer, date, and address are all in frame. Do not crop to the amount line only.
When a driving licence or residence card even appears
A driving licence or a residence card is useful only when it is on the list. A Chinese driving licence is commonly absent on the global site. Do not write “never accepted.” Write: open the dropdown, if it is missing, do not upload it.
I have seen someone travel with only a licence. Identification had no such row. They switched to a passport and continued. A licence that proves you can drive at home is not automatically a primary exchange document.
Whether a residence card is accepted follows the residence country you picked. Some countries treat it as ID. Some want a passport plus address. If the page does not list a residence card, a sharp photo still cannot enter the options.
Student cards, social-security cards, household registers — commonly also missing from the global primary list. Useful for errands at home is not useful here. The list is closed. An extra “prove it is me” miscellaneous file does not help, and it can show a name spelling that disagrees.
When you only carry one kind, follow list priority: if the list has a national ID, prefer that; if not, look at passport. Do not send half of each.
The face step is not another document pick, but a wrong document type will also fail a face match. Pick the type correctly, then face the camera. Light the face. Do not bring laminate-glare habits onto a face — a face wants features, not a passport held up in the same frame.
Does changing type clear progress
One review follows the type you picked. Changing type mid-way is a restart. Photos already up do not become the other document. Do not send a national-ID front and a passport back.
Not submitted yet, you can stop and change type. Already submitted, still in queue, do not immediately send a second set, or the two files fight. Wait for this result, then decide.
Once the bar says “in review,” do not refresh until the network dies. Refresh does not speed it. Repeated in-and-out can make you think you have to upload again. Note the submit time, open the same page later. This site cannot print how many hours a review takes. That is a platform queue, not a photography trick.

Before submit, match name, number, and expiry against the photo on paper. Most pages want a photo of the original, not a translation. If there is no translation row, do not stuff an extra PDF.
Questions that still come up at the document page
These keep appearing while the review page is open. The dropdown still wins. Do not paste this section onto someone else’s residence.
The passport expires in a month. Can I still send it?
If it is in date, you can send it. A month left is not an automatic bounce. Review wants “expiry is readable now,” not “two years of runway.” Finish this review on the current book. Replace it before the next trip. Do not send an already-expired book to look safer.
A temporary national ID, or an expired passport with an extension stamp, only works if the dropdown names that kind. If the kind is missing, a sharp photo still cannot enter. An extension page treated as a visa page is the wrong page. Review still wants the bio page.
Is a travel permit a primary ID here?
On the global site, corridor travel permits are commonly missing from the primary list. They work at a border. They are not automatically an exchange ID. If the list does not have them, walk a passport or a national ID. Do not drop a permit bio page into the passport slot — the MRZ layout differs, and the machine will not match.
A household register or a social-security card is the same shape. Useful for errands at home, commonly absent here. An extra file is another chance for the name spelling to disagree.
The face step keeps failing. Should I change document type?
Most face failures are light, glasses glare, or a liveness turn that did not finish. They are not a wrong document kind. Do not change type yet. Changing type is a restart, and shots that already passed can clear. Light the face, take the sunglasses off, turn as the page asks, try two or three times.
If it says the document and the face do not match, then look at the document: a family card, an old photo that no longer looks like you, two spellings of the name. Changing type will not save a mismatch. A card that is yours, and in date, will.
The card only has a Chinese name. What do I type in English?
If you hold a passport, copy the Latin letters on the passport. Do not invent a dot. If you only have a national ID and no passport Latin name, follow the romanisation rule on the review page, not the spelling you prefer. Once the account name is submitted, later withdrawals and P2P (C2C) “pay in your name” follow that same set.
A married-name change with the old name still on the card: use the name on the card. Changing the account first, waiting for a new card second, blows up the face step and proof of address at the same time. When the new card arrives, change details through the official flow. Do not verbally “I already changed it.”
Can I pull a submit back and reshoot?
If the bar already says in review, wait for this result. A second set sent into a live queue makes two files fight. Not submitted yet, you can stop and reshoot. How to read a bounce is another piece — see verification rejected. This handbook stops at pick, frame, submit.
Do I need a selfie holding the document?
If the page asks for a handheld, shoot one. If it only wants the original laid flat, do not squeeze your face and the card into one frame — the type is unreadable, and the face step has not started. An extra “prove it is me” handheld does not help, and it can crop expiry.
Fingers off the number and the MRZ. Arm out, card under the chin, is another liveness prompt. Do it only when the page writes it.
I live abroad. The passport is Chinese-issued. Which card?
Residence dropdown: the country you actually live in. Document: whatever that country’s list names. A Chinese passport is often an option. It is not always the only one. If the list also wants proof of address, prepare a local bill. Do not fill a foreign residence with a domestic national ID.

The ID number has an X, brackets, or spaces. What do I type?
Copy the characters on the card, including a trailing X. If the box strips spaces, the page validator wins. Do not add your own separators. A note in brackets, or the issuing-authority line, is not part of the number. Keep it out of the number box.
Match it against the photo on paper. Typing on screen while your eyes jump to the photo is how a digit slips. One wrong digit, and a face that already passed still bounces on the number check.
Does a higher tier ask for the same card again?
Read the page. Some upgrades only want address or a source-of-funds file. The document does not need a reshoot. If the page lists a document upload again, shoot a current in-date original. Do not resend the first compressed image. Glare and crop from that file are still there.
An upgrade and the first review are not the same queue. If the first is still in review, do not tap upgrade at the same time. Wait for the result, then send what the new list asks.
Corners are worn, the laminate is bubbled. Can I still use it?
If name, number, expiry, and the MRZ are readable, you have a chance. Wear is not an automatic bounce. Glare on a bubble breaks the type. Change the angle, or wait for a new card. Do not retouch the bubble flat. Security print disappears.
On the days you swap old for new, send only the one that is in date. New card not in hand, old card already clipped: do not send it. A clipped corner is an incomplete frame.
Under eighteen. Can a parent’s document pass this?
No. Identification is the account holder. A parent’s card will fail the face match. Age limits are whatever the signup page and the terms say. Under age, do not open. This handbook does not write a bypass.
A parent’s email can sometimes register. Verification will not pass. Later P2P (C2C) pay-in-your-name and withdrawals bind to that identity. Stop.
A scanning app, or the system camera?
The system camera is enough. Scanning apps love auto-crop and auto-enhance. The MRZ gets cut. Security print gets “sharpened” away. After a crop, check the four corners and the two letter lines before you upload.
A PDF from a scanning app, then a screenshot of that PDF, is a photocopy. Most review pages want a photo of the original. If there is no PDF row, do not stuff one.
Portrait mode or a beauty filter on. Will it pass?
Turn them off. Portrait mode blurs the background and the card edge goes soft; review reads that as a crop. A beauty filter turns security print into skin. System camera, no filter, no beauty mode, daylight by a window.
If you already shot one in portrait mode, do not retouch it back. Lay it flat and shoot again. Retouch is more obvious than the blur.
Do I send the chip page and the visa page too?
A passport wants the bio page. Visa page, blank visa page, chip page — if the page does not list them, do not send them. An extra page is another chance to cover something or blur it.
Some residences want a visa page as address support. Shoot it when that row appears. If it does not appear, stuffing one does not make the bio page more complete. If the bio page is blurry, reshoot only that page. Do not stack a visa page, a boarding pass, and a hotel bill in one frame to “look more real.” Review wants this page readable, not a travel story. A hotel bill belongs in the proof-of-address row, and only when that row is there.
