USDT issues on several chains. You think you are sending the same stablecoin. On the ledger it can be two fully different balances. TRC20, ERC20, and BEP20 each keep their own book.
On a Binance withdrawal, the network dropdown is not decoration. Pick the wrong network and the other wallet will not migrate it for you. Addresses look like strings of characters. They do not mix.
Do not memorise a fee. Tron congestion and Ethereum congestion are not one table. Open the withdrawal page for this send.
What multi-chain USDT actually means
Same brand of stablecoin, different contracts, different balances on different chains. A Tron address can hold a pile while the Ethereum address is zero. When a receiver gives an address, they have to give a network name too.
Tron addresses often start with a capital T. Ethereum and many EVM chains start with 0x. A 0x is not default ERC20: BEP20 is 0x too. Reading only the prefix picks the wrong row.
I checked one where they dropped an address and no network. I did not send. After they wrote Tron or Ethereum, I picked the matching row on Withdraw. One extra question is shorter than a later ticket.
An exchange deposit page also writes “only this network.” You withdrawing from Binance is them depositing. They wrote TRC20, you pick ERC20, the coins sit on another ledger, their system does not hear it.
Why the same characters cannot be pasted across
People say “this wallet takes three chains, pick any.” That is their software switching networks. The row you pick in the Binance dropdown still has to match the one they told you this time. A casual “any” can be walked back later. Get it in writing: which chain this send takes. Write it, then paste the address.
Before you pick, the withdrawal network chooser walks three questions: asset, size, and whether you fear loss, delay, or cost more. The tool leans. The withdrawal dropdown still wins.
Do not copy a contract address from a block explorer “to check.” An ordinary withdrawal uses a deposit address the exchange generated, not a token contract you found. Treat a USDT contract as a payee and the coins enter the contract, not their wallet. The withdrawal page wants a wallet address. Match that string.
How fee and confirm feel different
Fees are whatever the withdrawal page in front of you shows. They move. Tron USDT is often cheaper than Ethereum. That sentence does not replace the number on the page. On a tiny amount, the fee as a share looks ugly. On a large amount, a wrong-chain loss dwarfs a fee gap.

A protocol block is not a platform credit. A fast Tron confirm is the chain’s rhythm. Binance still wants enough confirms before it books a balance. The extra wait is the platform side. Ethereum slots are about 12 seconds; see ethereum.org blocks. Congestion makes confirms and fees worse together.
I sent one on Tron. The hash showed up fast. The account balance still waited. I thought it was stuck. Refreshing withdrawal history, status was walking. Do not send a second identical amount while it says processing.
You can rough the fee share: the page writes how much it deducts, divide by the amount you want credited. A high share on a small send is arithmetic, not the system picking on you. If the share looks ugly, merge into a larger send, or wait for the page fee to come back — still only if the network is the right one.
How to read the share: suppose this send deducts 1, you want 100 credited, the share is about one percent; credit 20, the share jumps to about five percent. Those numbers are a sketch, to decide whether a small send is worth walking alone. They are not a quote for a day. When the page number changes, divide again.
Speed feel also splits in two. A fast on-chain confirm only means the hash appeared early. A platform credit still waits on an internal confirm count. People read “Tron about 3 seconds” as “the wallet grows at once,” then refresh, then send a second. If the record still says processing, do not top up.
When you have to walk ERC20
If the receiver only takes Ethereum USDT, walk ERC20. Many contracts, custodians, and on-chain apps only recognise this ledger. Switching to Tron to save a fee is sending money to a book they do not watch.
They gave a 0x, and they wrote ERC20 or Ethereum in writing: send on Ethereum. A 0x and no network: stop and ask. Do not “they are all 0x.”
When fees jump, people want another chain. The switch is allowed only if they actually take it. A wallet with no Tron USDT door turns the saved fee into principal you cannot find.
Large sends probe a small amount first. A probe is not superstition. It confirms address, network, and memo. Probe works, then send the rest. A failed probe is still cheaper than sending all of it once.
A probe that is too small is sometimes ignored as dust, and it looks like “it never arrived.” Ask their minimum deposit, then pick a probe size. If you cannot ask, use the minimum on their deposit page. Do not invent a “one unit first try” that sits under their floor.
When TRC20 is the better fit
If the receiver clearly takes Tron USDT, and you care more about fee and speed, TRC20 is often the better fit. The wallet has to actually show a Tron balance, not “the name says USDT so it takes all of them.”
Use the Tron string. Pasting an ERC20 0x into a TRC20 withdrawal, the page sometimes refuses — good. Sending it is the bad outcome.
I sent a friend one. Their wallet home defaulted to Ethereum. The Tron send had arrived. They thought it had not. Switching to the Tron network showed it. Arrived and seen are two steps.
The withdrawal page sometimes shows “network paused.” Wait. Do not pick another row “just to send.” A pause means this ledger is not taking deposits for now. It is not an invitation to change chain. Changing chain is changing address rules. If they do not take that chain, forcing a send during a pause is worse than waiting.
Do not default this send to Tron because “last time was Tron.” They may have changed receiving accounts, and the network with them. Read this send’s words. Do not read memory.
If a memo field can be filled, follow what they asked. Some deposits use a memo to identify a person. A wrong memo, coins in a platform pool, their account empty — it looks like “on-chain arrived, book empty.” That is a different accident from a wrong network. Network right and memo right, then this send is done.
One more comparison with BEP20
BEP20 is a third common ledger. Addresses look like ERC20. The cost of a wrong pick is the same as the other two: coins on another chain, their system does not credit. Fees often sit under ERC20. The withdrawal page still wins.
People treat BEP20 as “cheap Ethereum.” It is not. Apps, browsers, and block explorers are not the same set. Look up a BEP20 hash on an Ethereum explorer and you will find nothing.
If an exchange deposit page has all three open, that is not a licence to deposit any of the three into one address. Each network has its own deposit address. Some happen to look alike. Some do not. After you tap copy, glance at whether the network tag is still the one you meant. A slipped network with the previous address still in the box is the usual self-inflicted wound.
The three-way rule is one sentence: the network the receiver wrote is the network you pick. Fee size is second. When you fear loss, do not gamble that they “also take it” to save a slice of fee.
If your own wallet can see all three, a withdrawal still follows “where this send is going,” not “which chain I use most.” Habit is a habit. Credit is this send’s network. Habit will not repair a wrong hash.

After a wrong pick, two common paths: the hash is on the wrong chain, so the coins are still on-chain, and whether they come back is the other platform and that chain’s support — this site cannot give a clock; the hash is missing on the chain you thought you used, so the network or the address is likely wrong. Either way, stop first. Do not send a second “correction.”
A fee gap can be compared again. A wrong-pick cost cannot. A comparison table fixes “I thought it was the same coin.” It does not fix “I never asked which chain they take.” Ask, then open the dropdown.
A 0x prefix is not a licence to mix ERC20 and BEP20. After you change network, clear the address box and copy again. Futures can lose 100%. A wrong-chain loss can also be the whole principal.
Will a wrong network hop to the right chain by itself?
No. TRC20, ERC20, and BEP20 are different ledgers. The platform will not migrate them for you.
Which network is cheaper?
TRC20 is often lower, but your live withdrawal page wins. Do not memorise yesterday’s number.
They only sent a 0x address. What now?
Ask for the network. A 0x can also be BEP20 or another EVM chain. It is not default ERC20.
